A positive reading experience I've had would be in elementary school, when I first learned to read. In first grade while all the other kids were reading chapter books, I was beginning my first picture books. It was not that I was stupid, or my parents did not try to teach me, it was that I just was not catching on. My teachers in preschool and kindergarten had tried to sit me down and slowly teach me, but soon became discouraged. At home my mom tried to help me, but there just was not enough time in either of our schedules. I was learning dance and gymnastics for hours and hours after school, and my mom had just had a new baby and was finally getting back to work. Finally halfway through my first grade year my teacher aid realized I did not know how to read. She discovered this on a reading day when she asked "What are you reading?". I did not know how to reply to such a question, I just sat there wondering what was going to happen. She looked down at the book, took my hand and we went into the back of the classroom, where she finally knew exactly what to do. For the rest of the year we worked together during reading time. By the end of the year I was finally ready to read a chapter book. We started with The Bookcar Children series, and in no time I was through those. By second grade I was reading all the Harry Potter books. Throughout the rest of elementary school I kept the highest reading level in my class. It was crazy to think I was so far behind, but in a short amount of time I was a great reader, who loved to read.
A negative writing experience I've had would have to be Junior year of high school, when I was in honors English. Honor English was not the hardest class I had had, but soon I learned why everyone dreaded being in that class. At the end of year we had to read a book called East of Eden. This book was hundreds of pages long, and it was annoying but soon it got worse. We had to write a thirty page paper. After three long months I was finally done. Since then I've hated writing.
