This cartoon by artist David Horsey is a bit of a summary of
the recent Republican National Convention, and reviews the so called “low
expectations” that were achieved. Paul Ryan, the Vice Presidential candidate,
appeared to have achieved simply not being mixed up with Sarah Palin. Romney
got what he wanted by simply not coming off entirely as a robot and proving he
is at least part human. And Clint Eastwood seemed as if he shouldn’t have even
been there, and was just happy to have finally made it off the stage after
being lost all night. Of course all these are bizarre goals and outcomes are irrelevant to politics and the campaign,
but that is the rhetoric of the article.
Horsey is pointing out really the only thing the RNC accomplished due to its
bizarre antics and lack of high expectations was the ability of the candidates
to overcome stereotypes about their personalities. This article’s target is
definitely the Republican party, therefore making the audience anyone not in
that party, specifically Democrats.
